Goal: To reassure the child you are listening, even when they get stuck.
Instruction:
The Action: When they start to stammer, stop what you are doing (put down the phone/spoon).
The Level: Get down to their eye level immediately.
The Look: Maintain warm, patient eye contact. Do not look away, look at their mouth, or look worried.
The Message: Your eyes say, "I have all the time in the world. I am listening to you.".
Goal: To prevent the child from feeling rushed or inadequate.
Instruction:
The Instinct: When a child gets stuck on "B-b-b-b...", parents naturally want to help by saying "Ball!".
The Problem: This tells the child, "You can't do it, so I will do it for you."
The Rule: Zip your lips! Wait. Even if it takes 10 seconds. Let them finish the word themselves.
Siblings: Ensure brothers and sisters know this rule too!.
